If the flooring is considered a crucial part of any interior design. It’s, therefore, a no-brainer idea. Come to think of it, it’s the first physical contact a person will have with your space. If that’s the case, how do you clean and maintain various types of floors?
How do you do it?
Well, it depends on the type of floor! The one-size-fits-all concept can’t work here unless you’ve decided to pay the price. So, what should you know? Well, as previously pointed out, the kind of floor matters; which is why some cleaning solutions can work wonders on one kind of floor and wreak havoc on another.
Below are the top 5 floor types and our tips on how to keep them ship shape.
Carpets And Tiles
If carpet is the case,
- Then, you shouldn’t joke with regular vacuuming. This is highly essential, as it prevents loose dirt and grit from working into the carpet pile which will damage the fibers.
- And I’ll suggest you use the types with revolving brushes as they easily get rid of tough or sticky dirt. But, what if the carpet has wine or grease stains?
- I’ll suggest you lightly sprinkle the affected part with baking soda rather than detergent; because it works quicker!
- Finally, follow the manufacturer’s recommendation on cleaning!
Wooden Flooring
Even though, a vacuum cleaner can be used on almost all types of floors that exist.
- I would strictly suggest you sweep your wood flooring more often than vacuum it.
- You can also mop once in two weeks with a well-wrung mop and detergent highly recommended for woods.
You know what water can do to your wood flooring; therefore;
- Never saturate the floor or allow the remnant of water of any quantity on it.
In the case of stains or marks,
- You can use white spirit to remove the stain. While gently rubbing a pencil eraser on the marks can do the trick!
Do you want to lighten up your wood flooring with its natural look without a dime?
- Simply wipe the surface with lemon oil and let it dry! Your natural or waxed wood flooring will be radiating! Don’t try this with varnished floors.
Laminated Flooring
- Use a vacuum cleaner, or better still, brush to clean the laminated floor regularly.
- Well-wrung cloth can also be used on it.
- Spilled water may not be a problem if cleaned instantaneously with any of your cleaning supplies.
- However, never use scouring materials on stains like lipstick or markers. Instead, use spirit or acetone.
Natural Flooring
- Use a cylinder-type vacuum cleaner without brushes to remove dirt, and at the same time, prevent unnecessary damage to the floor fibers.
As most natural floorings are equipped with stain inhibitors from the factory;
- It won’t be a terrible idea to ask your supplier of what-and-what can be used on stains.
While waiting for their reply.
- Remove stain with a clean cloth immediately after it occurs, not after it has been absorbed.
For general cleaning,
- Avoid using shampoo or carpet mousse as it can cause your natural flooring to shrink.
- Do you know what? I’ll suggest you hire a professional for thorough cleaning of your natural Flooring!
Ceramic Tiles
Unlike Stone floors; Ceramic tiles do not require any sealant every time you want to clean them.
- As a matter of fact, you can use water or an all-purpose cleaner on it.
- Although, you must avoid harsh abrasive detergents; they may scratch the glaze really bad!
- Remove stubborn marks with white spirit, but always do a spot test first.
Flexible Flooring
- Vacuum or brush regularly to remove dust and grit that might lead to your floor being scratched.
- Also, have a weekly schedule to wipe the floor with detergents highly recommended by your supplier.
- A dull look on the floor is most likely to occur if you use an abrasive cleaning agent; so avoid it!
In the case of scuff marks,
- Avoid white spirit or silicone-based products. Instead, use a scouring pad; but as usual, apply gently!
